Field Evaluation - AmpliFire™ Predator Game Call

By Keith Dunlap - Field Evaluator
Feb 23, 2010

In the spring of 2003, Cass Creek started production of realistic sounding, affordable, electronic game calls.  Ten years of development went into the first Cass Creek calls. Expertise gathered from renowned hunters, respected wildlife biologists, outdoor writers, naturalists, electronic engineers, world class game callers, teachers and outdoor photographers went into the design of each of the Cass Creek calls. They boast simple operation and tough, weather resistant housings which should guarantee that Cass Creek calls last for years of hunting.

Some electronic calls are complicated to use, so much so that it can be frustrating to use during hunting situations when the excitement level is high.  This call could not be simpler to use.  It has a list of the 10 predator game calls with indicator lights on the rear face of the unit.  Each sound is an authentic recording of animals, which adds realism and should improve your success rate during the hunt.  To select a different sound, simply choose from the list using the up and down buttons also located on the rear face of the Predator.  The Predator also has a volume control for the built-in speaker, which can reach volumes of 120+ dB.  On the bottom of the call there is an on/off switch, and a jack for adding an external speaker.

To operate the call while hunting, simply press the trigger located on the front of the unit, and the selected sound will play repeatedly until you press the trigger again.  You can also change calls instantly by selecting the sound and squeezing the trigger.  The trigger is a great feature because it enables you to change sounds without moving the unit and changing the direction of the sound.  Depending on the sounds you are using, this can add realism to your predator calling.  The Predator includes the following sounds to fit most any predator hunting need:
1.    Coyote Locator
2.    Cottontail Distress
3.    Coyote Food Fight
4.    Jack Distress
5.    Baby Jack Distress
6.    Wood Pecker Wail
7.    Raccoon Pups
8.    Kitten Distress
9.    Gray Fox Pup
10.    Rodent Squeal

Testing

The only real test besides durability for a game call is whether or not it calls in its intended quarry.  I proceeded to test the Predator by taking it with me on one of my late-night hunts for foxes on a local farm.  Because PA allows for them, I normally use electronic calls and red spotlights to hunt for foxes at night during the PA predator hunting season.  After getting into position at one of my more productive late night fox-hunting spots, I used the Predator electronic call with the Cottontail Distress sound at a medium volume to call in a vixen from what I estimate to be several hundred yards away from my location.  She trotted across a harvested cornfield directly toward my location to within 12 yards when I took the shot with my shotgun and dropped her in her tracks. Success like this is not always the case, but that night everything worked the way it was supposed to…including the AmpliFire Predator call.

There are several electronic game calls available, ranging in prices up to $500.  They boast various options, speaker types, realism, and settings…some are simple and some complex to use.  As far as I’m concerned for my predator hunting situations, the simpler a call is to use and the more affordable the better.  The Predator provides both for me…thumbs up Cass Creek!

The 'fruits' of my labor - my success is evidence enough for me.

Conclusion
At the end of my evaluation, my high opinion of Cass Creek electronic game calls was reinforced by the performance of the new AmpliFire Predator.  My fox-hunting success using the Predator is sufficient evidence for me to continue using this call.  I will try my luck using this call to hunt Coyotes in the near future…can't wait!

Cons:  none found during my evaluation
